John Pilling has contributed essays and articles to Poetry Nation Review for more than thirty years, including several on Rainer Maria Rilke. His study Fifty Modern European Poets (Heinemann) was praised by figures as diverse as Joseph Brodsky and Peter Levi, but his principal focus as critic and editor has been on the prose fiction, poems and unpublished writings of Samuel Beckett. His poems have appeared in Adam and Spectrum, and he has translated from the work of Yves Bonnefoy, Eugenio Montale, and ‘Der Nister’. He is Emeritus Professor of English and European Literature at the University of Reading.
