‘Bikes, Balls & Biscuitmen’ commemorates the achievements of Reading’s sporting heroes and celebrates the town’s sporting heritage, it profiles the unsung heroes and publicizes the hard work that goes on at grassroots level across the community.
The book chronicles the emergence and development of organized sports from Victorian times to the present day. Covering a wide variety of sports from Football and Athletics, Hockey & Cricket, to Swimming, Cycling, Speedway and Horse racing, the story will be told through the histories of local clubs and organizations, celebrating the origins of the sporting heritage we enjoy today. History is brought to life still further by drawing out individual stories of sportsmen and women from Reading, including accounts of Olympic and Paralympic gold medalists. Vignettes displaying relevant objects and memories contributed by the community engage the reader in the story and give it authenticity and relevance.
‘By shining a light on some of the sporting heroes who have emerged from the playing fields of Reading, and by recalling many more triumphs and tribulations, the book traces a journey from small beginnings to a place at the ‘top of the table’ in national sport. With so many of us involved in sport at various levels it is a story we can all take pride in.’ From the Foreword by Sir John Madejski, OBE, DL, DLitt.
