In 1999, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared March 21st to be World Poetry Day, a day to “give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements”.

We can also see potential in new technologies and short messages that circulate on social networks, breathing fresh life into poetry, fostering creativity and the sharing of poems and verses that can help us to engage more fully with the world.”

WORLD ENOUGH

Such as it is, imagine this
sunset centuries ago,
guess what brick courses
saw by way of costume drama
in twilight whether anyone
was watching it or no.

Such as it is, reality
slips past on a warehouse
without the slightest emphasis,
thrives if it fail to become
yet one more news item —
hoarfrost, a whisper, or kiss.

Such as it is, and everywhere,
it comes at us sideways
from bits of grey sky
as when a bureaucrat asked me
where did I plan to be buried?
I wasn’t planning to die.
