Two
Rivers Press has rightly been described as 'one of the most
characterful small presses in the country'. Now in its twelfth
year, the press is a cooperative, with a growing reputation
for bold design and illustration combined with distinctive new
writing. Notable early successes included an illustrated edition
of The Ballad of Reading Gaol,
The Story of Willie Wimmera, about an aboriginal boy brought
back to Reading from Australia by Christian missionaries in
the 1850s, and illustrated books of poetry by Helen Dunmore,
Jane Draycott, and others.
Two Rivers Press is strongly rooted in the Thames Valley, Reading
in particular, and many of our titles deal with aspects of the
area's history. Early examples were Where Two Rivers Meet: the
Story of Kennetmouth, Apples Berkshire
Cider (an ABC of local cider-making), and the story of Broad
Street Chapel, Reading. Our most recent bestsellers have
been Adam Sowan's A Much maligned Town:
Opinions of Reading 1587 to 1997 and Abattoirs
Road to Zinzan Street: Reading's streets and their names.
In 1997 the commitment and ambition of the press was rewarded
with a grant from the Arts Council of England, and we have gone
on to develop a strong line in illustrated poetry and prose
from local writers, exemplified by The
Waterlog, a journal of poetry, prose and visual arts featuring
a range of writers from the well-known (Peter Redgrove, Mario
Petrucci, etc) to the previously unknown, as well as interviews,
essays and stories.
In 2004 there was an exhibition at Reading Museum to celebrate
10 years of Two Rivers accompanied by a book Charms
against Jackals.
Two Rivers
Press stands for the best in small independent publishing, and
we intend to continue to surprise and entertain readers who
love unusual books written and designed with imagination, wit
and flair.
